I recently bought a epi les Paul studio lt in black, great guitar, plays and sounds great ,really happy with it, However my mate bought the same guitar only in cherry burst.
When I played it the first thing I noticed was the weight difference between his a mine, his was heavier by 2.4 lbs (we weighed them on a set of scales) now the question is - should there be so much of a difference between the two?? Exactly the same guitar only in different colours.
    What are your thoughts guys???

It happens, all the time in fact. Wood is a natural product subject to all sorts of variations.

Its supposedly made of mahogany, is there tha much difference in something as small as a guitar with exactly the same specifications?

Is the heavier one an older one from '95-'05 ?

No, there both 2019! Mine bought in March 2019 (made in 2018 according to a serial numbers) and my mates is a week old may 2019 ( again made in 2018)
I feel like I've been robbed or this isn't made from mahogany.
Compared to my mates it feels like it's made from pine as it's that light.

None of them are made from "mahogany", but both of them should be made from the same wood (most likely Meranti, also dubbed asian mahogany. Very often it's actually a good quality wood,
Wood is not manufactured material, and each piece has different properties, even if cut from the same treed.

That's why I always take gear reviews with a grain of salt and I believe the tonewood part of get x wood to have x sound, is (or can be) false.

Enjoy your guitar mate, nothing wrong with it.

    that is indeed strange...:hmm:

have you pulled a pickup to have a look inside ?

They had used 'other' bodies in the past, for example from an (heavily chambered) Ultra, that would explain the big difference

I would bet that is what happened to mine, hmm is it worth taking it back to the shop I got it from? I think I just might because at 2.3 kg (about 5.0 lbs in weight) its lighter than a ultra or close to it.

I would take a look inside before deciding what to do with it

Epiphone would have gone the chambered way like the Ultra ? Cool !

This is how it should look if it's as the Ultra.

I would be way happy to have a Studio like that. Why don't you like its lighness ? You think heavy = better ?

I am happy with the studio lt, but since I've felt the difference in weight it's not really what I paid for.
When I've got the strap on, it feels like its weight is biased towards the neck (really neck heavy) .
I will pull the pups and see inside ,then get back to you.

A body can have a 1kg difference easily
I like heavier guitars, but sometimes lightweight wood happens...
The body of my soon to be made guitar should be around 2,5 kg and it's very thick, like 2 solidbodies stacked together (7,5cm)
At this point,I believe it will balance nicely, but It might as well be neck heavy (neck is maple with ebony).
    Sometimes, you can't win^^.

Most people would prefer ligher guitars anyways...

Don't bother opening it then, just return it. It will make someone else happy to get a nice discounted open box light Studio. :h5:

Took the guitar back to the shop, they checked the weight, pulled the pups etc and the out come was ....... it was a ultra body with studio bits.
They exchanged it straight away, I upgraded at the same time to a epiphone les Paul standard plus top pro for a few ££ more.
    Couldn't be happier.

So, do all Studio Lt come with that chambered body, or was that an error ? Interesting if so.

I'm not sure, all the store said was that there has been an error in the build and they are sending the studio back to epiphone
