Hi, joined the forum a while back but not been active so I thought I’d better do a proper intro post. I’m new to the Forum but not to Epiphones, my first one being a Cherry Dot back in (I guess) around 2008, and then the EJ200 I still have a couple of years later.

The Dot was a personal favourite and was my go-to guitar ahead of a very nice USA tele and a P90 Soapbar PRS I had at the time, and so having established myself as a twin-humbucker semi kind of guy I decided to rationalise and traded all three for a Cherry Gibson ES339, a gorgeous guitar which was my main squeeze until last year, when a longing for variety resurfaced.

Having looked at a few Epiphone ES339s in shops I could see the difference, but the gap wasn’t anything close to the gap in value, certainly not to a player of my very average abilities. So I sold the Gibson at a profit, and replaced it with the very lovely VS ES339 I still have, a VS Les Paul Plus to Pro and a Mexican Strat and few Squiers to have fun modding (but that’s a whole other story).

These are the three in the pictures, and I’ve now added to the herd last week with an ES339 Ultra - I live away mid week and was looking for a cheap 339 or Dot to keep in my flat, when I came across a gorgeous Cherry Ultra (with case) for 339 Pro money, and snapped it up.

I do love my Pro, but I have to say the Nanomag system adds a fantastic additional dimension. I play it through a Fender Mustang modelling amp which means I can record a loop using Nanomag + acoustic amp model and then noodle away over it using the Probuckers and whatever amp model springs to mind. Purists would hate it of course, but it seems a great combination and use of complimentary technologies.

I have to say current Epiphones are astonishingly good value, beautifully built and lovely sounding. I love to mod but haven't felt the need with any of my Epis. To be fair, although my Mexican Strat is heavily modded I’ve just picked up one the Player series Tele’s and it is very, very close to my old USA one, and I don’t see that getting modded any time soon either. We live in fabulous times for mid-price guitar fans!

So that’s it for now - Pics of the Ultra to follow, and no Epi Herd is ever complete - still GASsing for a Casino...
