I frequently use a Shure sm-57 but also like the Telefunken m81 and will sometimes use both, the Shure right up in the speaker's grill and the Telefunken a couple of inches away to add a bit of "depth" to the sound.

    You're just starting out right?

You could start out by using an amp that has the interface built in like a Boss Katana instead of getting into DAW's and DI's. At that point you could skip the mic and do cabinet emulation.

    You need an audio interface.

When I started recording to my last laptop I used my SM 57 (I bought used out of the Tradin' Times- pre interwebs paper version of CL), with an XLR to 1/4" adapter. Then a female 1/4" to male RCA, into a Behringer USB interface.

Also made a 1/4" to RCA instrument cable so I could go straight into my DAW- free version of Reaper.
