So I went down to a local pawn shop that was having a "going out of business" sale just to look around and see what they had.

I had no intention of buying anything, but I saw a black Squier Affinity Strat in the back so naturally I had to take a look.

About 30 minutes later, I ended up taking it home along with a gig bag and a new pack of strings all for $40.

It's got some dings, scratches, and needs cleaned up, but I think it could be a pretty decent guitar. Glad I got some new strings because it needs them bad.

The neck and frets feel good and everything works as it should so I figured for that price, why the hell not?

If I decide I don't like the rosewood fretboard, I have an old beat up Affinity Strat neck with a maple one that I can put on instead

All in all, I'm pretty happy with the deal.

Been looking at Tele's recently, started with the Affinity, then thought 'oh the standard ones are nice' - now I'm up to a 3 colour burst Classic Vibe... I really should use a max price when I search....

I'm sure it's only a matter of time before someone here convinces me to mod this Strat. I love this forum but it's terrible for my wallet.

Look for the SE Strat, it's the one that came with the amp pack. Small headstock, two string trees, light truss rod channel, close together 12th fret dots.
It's a full size body and has a great chunky neck with skunk stripe in the back.

    Here's one I got for $30 CND.

Preaching to the choir. Of course, I have zero issues modding and upgrading "lesser" models.

Hey, why doncha mod that Strat? :p

My son has an Affinity. I like the feel, weight and neck. The tuners are OK, but can be improved. I think it also has the dime-sized pots, so think about full-sized pots. You probably want to replace the nut as well. Then the pickups. :D

If you're doing the electronics, you might as well build it on a nice pickguard.

Shielding is nice thing. I use conductive adhesive copper tape and it's great stuff - you need to be careful with the stuff (as @Dave J will tell you). It ain't duct tape, it's basically a roll of razors.

To do cavities, I cut a "floor" then I cut strips and run them vertically up the sides. Use plastic tools or Popsicle sticks to really stick them down and work corners.

To be honest, I never gave the stuff a thought about being sharp, until you sliced your thumb.
I guess watching all of those "Dave's World of Fun Stuff" and "Crimson Guitars" videos on YouTube seeped into my brain. I just learned the "right" way and avoided trouble. I use one of these to do the "dangerous" bits.
