By way of introduction:

My first Epi was a modern LP. I was so impressed that I got a trans fade SG I call Rorschach. Also impressed. On to the ‘59 Standard, LP Jr, and P90 SG.

I just needed to confess to people who won’t judge.

I also want to ask a question about the P90s but thought it considerably rude without saying hello first.

Hey, y’all.

Here’s a mugshot s’water sent me of Rorschach upon release. He’s chilling on the couch right now.

The SG special I mentioned- here’s a view of the pickups from the bass side. They’re lower on the treble side.

As shipped. Do I rotate them?

More typically the bass side will be slightly lower than the treble side but overall pickup height is something best judged by you own ears. FWIW most P90s can be run fairly high.

that looks fine, but as soulman said, it depends on whether you like the sound. For example, if you find the neck to be too boomy, you might want to play around with the height etc... Also, on routs like this, I like to put a bit of high density foam under the pickups (near the bridge facing side) to balance it out so the pickup runs parallel with the strings It's not a must - more of an OCD thing.

I like that foam idea.

Part one, definitely agree. That’s why I haven’t made that 180 move yet. I really love the sound, and I finally understand what people mean when they say “dig in” to a p90.

Part two? Could be an OCD thing. I think we like symmetry in general and maybe that’s the reason this looks odd to me. And what if I like the sound better? Seems easily reversible (please warn me now if there’s some secret reason I shouldn’t dive into this.)

idk. I’m new. I played acoustic for decades, touched an electric guitar exactly once during that time (played/sang “Black Peter” with a friend one night ‘til he got his groove right behind the kit. One of 4 times I was plugged in w other people around.)

The ‘59 I mentioned. I love that it’s often called the “Standard Outfit,” very quaint, makes me want to wear a turtleneck under a sport-coat, and also the Gibson pickups really are incredible

I’m thinking about swapping them out into my LP modern, which has a nicer (IMO) feeling neck profile, nicer (IMO) fretboard, and upgraded electronics, as well as being at least a pound lighter (though I’m not sure why I’d ever touch this one again if I did it. Good one, Epi .)

On the foam thing, no secret reason at all! Just get foam that's slightly higher density so that it doesn't start flaking apart after a few years.

The whole deal with pickups is such a personal thing. One man's golden throated tonality is another man's noisy cacophony. We all have different tastes which mean different pickups and height adjustment.

There are some rules of thumb for certain types of pickups and but also so many exceptions to the rule that it really comes down to "if it sounds good to you it is good". It's your ears doing the listening.

Glad to hear you picked up on the "dig in" deal with P90s so quickly. No pickup I've ever played is more responsive to the direction a player chooses to take it in than a really good sounding P90.

Glad to have you with us.
